A total of lives were lost including 7 people on the ground as well as the two people in the Cessna light aircraft. More than 20 residences were damaged or destroyed. Droves of off-duty firefighters voluntarily reported back to their assigned stations or to the crash scene to help where they could. And this page has photos of the dead. San Diego Magazine ran an extended piece in on the disaster, and the aftermath. Pieces of the Cessna, with its two-man crew, crashed at 32nd and Polk streets in the heart of North Park, an eclectic mix of shopkeepers and working-class residents, a few miles from the San Diego Zoo. Flight recorder data showed the collision happened at 1 minute, 47 seconds after 9. From resounding collision to fiery aftermath, the elapsed time was just 13 seconds. Are you going to Comic Con in ? I hope your holidays involved lots of parties, presents and Christmas cookies – and if you were freezing in the Northeast like I was, a fireplace. But now’s the time to think about where you really want to go and when you need to make it happen. If you’re still new to Comic Con life and all of its reservations, badge sales and budgeting, you might think of going to a Con as some kind of fun activity that either “works out” or it doesn’t.
But that’s just not true. While luck does play into it sometimes mercilessly , there is a fair amount of planning involved that ultimately determines whether or not you walk through the doors of a major Con. Here’s what you need to think about. Which Comic Con do you want to go to? You already know if you’re going to SDCC.
But if you’re not and you wish you were, you can set yourself up to go in by signing up for a Member ID , reading blogs and forums like Friends of Comic-Con , and getting a realistic idea of what is involved. San Diego can be nirvana but it can also fall devastatingly short of a first-timer’s expectations. Get a grip on what’s required now.

I think something that I am seeing with my generation and the students I teach is a hunger for more diversity in the type of stories told about the African diaspora. They want to see themselves onstage, and they are looking for bold contemporary stories that reflect their lives. I think one of the things that is sometimes missing when companies produce African-American theater is the sense of subtlety or the multiple perspectives that young African-Americans live with. Especially in San Diego, we exist in a multicultural environment, and that is not how our stories are always reflected onstage.
I feel we have a few strong theater-makers who are dedicated to getting true reflections of African-Americans onstage. I know with Moxie Theatre and artistic director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, one of their missions is to train not only artists but audiences and decision-makers who can support artistic institutions and serve on committees and boards. Leah Goodwin, Dea Hurston, Starla Lewis and Delicia have all been instrumental in mentoring the next generation of black theater-makers.
I would like to see more young African-Americans with more of a presence among the artistic leadership. I would like to see more space at some of the larger theaters for African-Americans to have a seat at the leadership table. It is hard to be honest about what you see and feel when you are also hoping for those companies to hire you, and you are the only person of color around the table or you are working in a contingent position.
Going forward it is my hope that we see more work that breaks the mold and stereotype of African-American theater.

The giant panda is a national treasure in China and is therefore protected by law in its bamboo forest home. This unique bear has long been revered by the Chinese and can be found in Chinese art dating back thousands of years. The Chinese call their beloved pandas large bear-cats. Giant pandas have also fascinated people living outside of China; French Missionary Pere Armand David first described them for science in Now, more than years later, the worldwide love for pandas has been combined with international efforts to keep them from becoming extinct.
How did the panda get its colors? We aren’t exactly sure. One theory is that pandas developed the contrasting black and white colors over time so they would stand out in the forest and be able to find each other to mate. Another idea is that the broad blockings of contrasting color may serve to camouflage the panda in the bamboo or treetops. Anyone who’s tried to spot one of our panda cubs up in the tree napping can verify how difficult that can be!
